A Very, Very Helpful Book!
By Dove
This book absolutely saved me! This is not a super clinical analysis of BPD. It is meant for family members of people who have BPD and it's a clear, easy way to help us understand the loved one's behaviors. My sister, I believe, has BPD. She has not been diagnosed with it but, as the book indicates, it's nearly impossible to get this diagnosis because the person cannot face up to their negative behaviors toward others. It has taken me about 30 years to reach this point. I took her verbal abuse, put downs, criticisms and rages for so long. I did not want to lose the relationship! But I just can't handle it anymore. She disowned me as a sister many times and the last time she did it, I finally accepted it. I didn't chase her and try to work it out any more. I realize now it can never be worked out because she cannot put herself in another person's shoes. She was shocked that I finally put my foot down. She still thinks it is "all my fault". It is heartbreaking, though. I miss having a "sister" but the peace of mind I've had since not communicating with her much for about 2 or 3 years is priceless. Now, if only I could convince our elderly parents to stop taking her verbal abuse, guilt trips, neglect, complaint onslaughts, etc., it would be much more peaceful in our family.
This book definitely helps a family member to set and keep clear boundaries with the loved one who has BPD.

A must read for those who care for people suffering from BPD, ASPD, DPD and Bi-Polar
By Scott J. Johnson
If you are dealing with a partner, child or other family member with a personality disorder, this is one of the best books to read. Having an ex-wife with bipolar and BPD this book was one of the best to read out of the 4-5 I've read in the last few years. It goes into depth about the disorders, but even more so stories of incidents which exemplify the patterns. While the occasional incidents of these disorders can cause havoc with our relationships, it is best for us without reservation to understand them first and foremost. It is hard not to react to the irrational and selfish nature of these disorders, but understanding and better coping skills will help you detach and set healthy boundaries. It also is necessary to accept that we cannot fix those with these disorders. Once you understand the core concept within this book as the affected having self-only-survival behaviors, then you can find balance and the proper involvement in thier lives. I highly highly recommend this book if you are dealing with people who suffer mental illness in your life.

It's a softer feminine approach to personality disorders. I wonder if she would ever sit in a room alone with a man with a history of violence. Does that negatively bias her sample? In that vein, I get the feeling her approach to a growling pit bull would be to say- "Please, let's continue this another day"
