ALEX CROSS THE LINES TO SAVE THE CITY!

Cross the Line by James Patterson, the twenty-fourth instalment in the Alex Cross series, is for die-hard fans of the series. As a long-time admirer of bestselling author James Patterson and a huge, huge fan of the Alex Cross series, I’m pretty excited about each new release and wanted each new chapter in the series to be a good one. I have been disappointed with some while most have kept me entertained, and satisfied. And this latest addition to the series is a well-crafted one where our hero faces a daunting task with a crime wave sweeping all over Washington, DC.

In this latest Alex Cross thriller, a baffling crime wave hits Washington, DC, with a high-ranking police official ending up as one of the victims. The police department is caught groping in the dark. Alex Cross and his wife Bree teams up to find the killer. But both husband and wife finds themselves at odds at crucial juncture, thereby impeding their work. When a vigilante group strikes with disastrous consequences, Alex Cross knew he has to tread cautiously and quickly before it is too late. In due course Alex Cross’ sharp mind sees a pattern in the method of the killers targeting victims who might have actually broken the law.

Cross the Line by James Patterson written in his true trademark style is one that you just can't put down once you start it. I loved the setting, the characterization and the premise of the story. The book wrangles together what I would have considered a weird medley of plot themes – murder, mystery, domestic issues, vigilante, and unsolved crimes. This book has got two things right - a terrific plot and strong characters. It is interesting to see the continuous development of the characters in the series, which is a welcome sign that James Patterson has no intention of bringing it to an end. And I can’t seem to have enough of Alex Cross!

The annoying Nana Mama still crops up way too often

CROSS THE LINE is James Patterson’s 24th book in the Alex Cross series. I’ve never been a big fan of the series, but I give this one some high marks. Believe this book was actually written by Patterson without the help of his usual surrogate writers. For the most part the story is an action thriller and the Cross family appearances are kept to a minimum (thank goodness). The annoying Nana Mama still crops up way too often. The story starts with a wave of senseless killings across Washington DC and its suburbs. Only after the District Chief of Detectives and his Slovakia girlfriend are gunned down in cold blood on a busy public walkway does it grab the attention of Washington politicos. They demand swift action. Dr. Cross is asked to take the job as Chief of Detectives but turns it down. His wife, Bree Stone, accepts the position. This makes for interesting team and family dynamics as they pursue bad guys across the District. Interest grows as the story wades through several subplots. One involves a group of hardcore ex-military vigilantes who take the law into their own hands, another trudges into the manufacture and distribution of dangerous narcotics, and yet another deals with the trafficking and servitude of young European women at an exclusive Washington area resort. Cross and Stone ferret out the criminal activity with tact and practiced protocols. There is plenty of action with good fight scenes and shootouts. Although not a Cross fan, I must say the novel is engaging and held my interest. I give the story 4-stars.

"Cross the Line;" A Book You'll Want in Audible & In Kindle Format - Authentic Character-Based Action-Adventure Crime Fiction

Written in Adult English, but, with only a very few f-bombs, this crime fiction novel would probably be rated PG-13 if it were a film.

Quick Overview

Written mostly in first person POV, this is classic James Patterson and his character Alex Cross.

The story leads with a prologue, but, for the life of me, I can’t figure out why the prologue wasn’t simply titled Chapter 1. Whatever, though, this and the subsequent chapter drew me into the story and held on to me better than most other writers do.

Then again, I am definitely a James Patterson fan. Still, this Alex Cross novel exhibits a good opening with action and descriptions that, at every turn, caught my interest and sucked me in deeper and deeper.

POV – Mostly first person, but the first person is not always Alex Cross. As the author often does in other books, he lets us know what a victim sees, feels, smells and understands at their moment of death. The challenge, for me as a reader, was to forget what the victim saw when I am reading what Alex Cross first notices upon reaching a crime scene.

GENRE – Billed as a Mystery Thriller-Suspense. Personally, I see it more as an Action-Adventure Crime Fiction novel.

PLOT OR CHARACTER – The key to this would ordinarily seem to be plot, as are most Patterson stories. Yet, the character development, letting us glimpse a character’s personal life and how it affects his judgment, convinces me that the magic here is in strong character development.

PACE – I love the pace. Taut action at some settings. At others, a slightly more leisurely description that allows us to catch out breath. There also is a bit or sarcastic dry wit, such as when another officer working on the case has an anniversary that demands the man’s attention away from the job. I won’t spoil it for you though.

EDITING – Of course this is professionally edited, removing or eliminating issues more commonly found in self-published works, sold at far lower prices.

PAGE LENGTH – 401 pages; Audible, 8 hours 35 minutes.

Q - Is this a book that I can read without having to read others first?
A – Yes, but most readers will have already read several Alex Cross novels.

Q – If this is a recurring character or a series, does it have a cliffhanger ending?
A – No. There is no cliffhanger ending.

Q - Is this a fast, easy read or is it more of a leisure read?
A – At 400 pages, this is not the sort of book you will read during commutes, but, it reads much faster than your typical 400-page tome.

Q - My biggest pleasure or disappointment?
A – For an Alex Cross fan there are no disappointments. What I am most pleased by Cross the Line is that it doesn’t feel like formula-based writing. When you consider how many books the author writes in any given year, it is easy to understand how some sort of formula must be necessary, but this story reads as if it were the only thing on this writer’s mind. If writing can have charisma, Cross the Line has oodles of charisma. At least for me.

To give a feel for the editing, and the style and flow of this work, I am posting a brief excerpt below.

Excerpt

The next drawer down was full of files. I looked through them, found out that she owned a late-model Audi A5 and that she vacationed in the Caymans— a lot, as in three times in the prior year. But there was nothing that gave me a clear idea of how she’d paid for it all.

I was thinking she’d have to have an income of over a hundred grand to live like this. Did Level 2 Certified Coaches make that kind of money? If so, maybe I was in the wrong business.

I thought about breaking the lock on the first cabinet but decided to take a look at the computer first. To my surprise, when I ran my finger across the touchpad, the screen lit right up and showed me the desktop. Several different applications were running.

One was Edita’s law school e-mail account. I sat down and scanned through the e-mails, seeing nothing from Tom McGrath. Most of the messages were to and from professors and classmates. One classmate, JohnnyBoy5, had sent six e-mails to her in the eighteen hours preceding her murder.

Really? read one sent around ten thirty the previous night. Standing me up again? This was your meet, remember?

I did a search of her entire in-box, looking for all e-mails from JohnnyBoy5. There were more than a hundred, going back eighteen months. I rearranged them so they were in chronological order and read a tale of growing obsession.

JohnnyBoy5 had evidently been smitten by Edita Kravic from the get-go, and he was not shy about saying so. Though she seemed to flirt with him at times, for the most part, she did nothing to encourage him.

Must have for Wright fans

If you have already read the other reviews you know how good this book is. I wish they had this available when I first started getting interested in Frank Lloyd Wright back in college. All they had then were the dingy, dark, older pictures that really didn't convey just how great some of Mr. Wright's houses were. These new pictures really show how much genius he had in design. What is even more apparant when you see some of these new pictures is just how much mastery he had for setting up a home with natural light. Simply put, if you have the money and are even a casual fan, you should just treat yourself and get the book.

Best Wright House Photos!

I honestly do not know how many Wright books I have(40-50?). There are better photos of one house like Fallingwater in specific books devoted to one house, but that being said, this is the best book of photos of Wright Houses, particularly Usonian houses that I have ever seen. It is simply stunning. Even the site photographs are magnificent. When you compare the houses that have been moved from their original site(Pope-Leighy, Gordon)to those that have not it makes the genius of Wright even more amazing.

A valuable book, especially for beginning collectors like myself. Well written in a conversational style that welcomes the reader in. It's worth noting that, due to the author's own experience and background, the book focuses primarily upon artifact collecting in the Western U.S. and is therefore of maximum benefit for readers from that region.

A good book, however contains a lot of personal family photos and scenes of camp sites of nil interest or information to anyone but the authors family. Also has a fair amount of pottery information, a strange choice for a book on stone artifacts and arrowheads. Good but not fantastic.

A Very Good Read

I have long enjoyed reading James Patterson's detective novels, but this one is in another ball game. It is what I would call a science fiction thriller. The originality is extraordinary and is a prequel to The Lake House, which I also enjoyed reading. Without giving too much away, this novel is a real page turner if you like this sort of genre.

Waste of my money and time

I waited until I read the whole Ivy and Cullen series. I am having a hard time writing a good review of the books. In as much as I didn't like the books, because I thought they were poorly written and sometimes downright stupid... I kept buying them because I wanted to know the outcome. I read a lot of books. Mostly adult romance. Not all are good but most of them are great and I have re-read some a few times. But this series..... I won't be re-reading it. First to stretch it out to 12 books was just greedy. I paid $26.00 plus for a story that could have been condensed into one novel for less. I'll admit the sex was hot in the books but again there was no continuity in the writing. The storyline wasn't even plausible!!! It's a bad writers Fifty Shades of Grey!!! Anyway, I'm glad for the happy ending but it seems it was anticlimactic after everything they went through. Case in point..... Cullen is being investigated for killing a patient but yet with just a few hours notice he's back in an operating room doing brain surgery..,,, really!!!! Ok I said my piece. What hospital in their right mind would allow that??? There are a lot of writers out there. I love finding writers and reading new books but I hate wasting my hard earned money on sub-par writing so I'll continue with my favorites and know I'm getting a quality read!

Great books but way to much money for the length of the books

I thought these books had a very good storyline, I enjoyed Ivy and Cullens story alot. I don't think I will continue with Ivy's cousin tho because (the reason for my 3 star rating) they are not worth the cost of the books. They are way to short for the money. I paid .99 for the first 2 and then $2.99 for the next 10 and they are only 32 to 34 pages long. Got caught up in the story so I had to get them, but no more. You could put atleast 3 or 4 of them together for the $2.99 cost. Way to much money for so little book. Sorry would love to continue with the story but I just can't afford it and don't want to wait for a half hour read.

*** Book Twelve is pretty much the end of Ivy and Cullen's story. Book Thirteen begins a new storyline featuring Ivy's cousin, Lanie Day, who was introduced in this installment and billionaire playboy CEO, Brayden Forman which continues in Books Fourteen, Fifteen and concludes in Book Sixteen.

Cherish is the twelfth book in Kelly Favor's suspenseful The Billionaire's Rules Serial and it totally rocks! This is my very first experience with Favor's work but I must say, I'm impressed with what I've read so far. This is NOT a standalone story but rather a serial with sixteen installments so we all know what that mean.... dare I say it, cliffhangers - fifteen to be exact since Book 16 is the conclusion of The BIllionaire's Rules. Yikes! Each installment is relatively short which makes them perfect for a quick break or lunchtime read. The journey begins with Ivy Spellman, a recent college graduate who has been hired as a data entry temp by Biomatrix Pharma, one of the largest and most prestigious drug companies in Boston. Out of her group, she has been singled out by the handsome CEO of the company, Cullen Sharpe who has for no apparent reason chosen her to bring him his coffee. Ivy had always been the shy, quiet, mousy student who always sat in front, kept her head down, took meticulous notes and got good grades. She has just recently finished school and has no real job experience other than working as a part time grocery clerk so this is her first real job. She has no idea why Mr. Sharpe has taken an unusual interest in her but she only hopes that it doesn't lead to her termination. It certainly couldn't be because of her good looks because she would never be beautiful enough to attract the attention of someone like handsome, wealthy Cullen Sharpe. Even her manager, Emma Marks, seems to immediately dislike her. What the heck? After Ivy spills a cup of scalding hot coffee in Mr Sharpe's lap, she is called to his office to discuss her failure of his assigned task and to Ivy's surprise, he offers her tutelage in the form of.......discipline. What? Mr Sharpe presents Ivy with a choice but what will she decide??? She decides to decline his offer and leave his office but immediately regrets her decision. Ivy's indecision and inexperience torment her as she tries to resume her work. She is invited to a nearby bar for a drink after work with Lucas and several other coworkers. There is an altercation at the bar involving a very tipsy Ivy and a group of very obnoxious male patrons. The only friend she seems to have among her co-workers is Lucas who unsuccessfully tries to rescue her from their unwelcome advances. But just who arrives in time to come to Ivy's rescue? Why, handsome, hunky Cullen Sharpe, of course! Apparently, the mysterious Mr. Sharpe is very attracted to lovely, young, inexperienced Ivy and wants to do more than just discipline her at work. He spirits her away to his apartment where he rejects her after learning she is a virgin. What the heck? Ivy leaves and is more determined than ever to stay away from the fickle Mr Sharpe but can he stay away from Ivy? Apparently not! He insists that she attend a company luncheon at a nearby venue where she quite literally bumps into Xavier Montrose, President of Vellum Pharmaceuticals, a direct competitor of her boss' company, Biomatrix. And Xavier asks her for a date! Oh my! Cullen Sharpe witnesses the exchange and is furious. Oh my glory! Cullen Sharpe may not want her but apparently he doesn't want anyone else to have Ivy either? What is wrong with that man? What will Ivy do? Will she defy her Boss, otherwise known as Sir or Mr Sharpe as he's asked to be called, and accept a date with Xavier? I think not, at least not yet. Cullen Sharpe doesn't give her a chance. It looks as if the enigmatic Mr Sharpe can't stay away from Ivy and this time, he does the deed. That's right, Ivy is no longer a virgin! She spends the night with Cullen but when morning comes, he's back to his same cruel, arrogant self telling her that she should stay away from him. What is this guy's problem? But when Xavier is waiting outside the Biomatrix building for Ivy the next day and whisks her away for lunch, Cullen is absolutely livid. He marches into the restaurant and demands that Ivy leave immediately. And now, he showing up at Ivy's apartment in the middle of the night - uninvited! Oh my glory! Poor Ivy will soon be suffering from whiplash as a result of Cullen's mood swings and his off and on again behavior. He wants her, he doesn't want her, he wants her! But she can't turn him away! She's already in too deep! And I do mean emotionally and legally! OMG! Why is Xavier Montrose so interested in Ivy and just what is he up to??? Is the email he sent Ivy real and why did he send it? Hmmm...... And what exactly was Lucas doing in Emma Mark's office at her computer and why is he watching Ivy so closely??? After Ivy finally confronts Lucas for reading her email, Lucas delivers an unbelievable confession and a terrifying ultimatum to Ivy but is Lucas Hogan truly a FBI special agent and if so, why is he investigating Cullen Sharpe? Could there be a little corporate espionage happening at Biomatrix or murder? The truths, lies, consequences and threats are slowly taking an emotional and physical toll on Ivy. Ivy is threatened after someone sends her pictures of Cullen and her making love. The turmoil is too great and Ivy collapses while with Cullen. He takes her to his home to care for her where Ivy finally reveals the truth to Cullen? Ivy may be in danger and Cullen claims he has a way to protect her from everything - but only if she marries him! What??? Even after a quickie marriage in Vegas, the secrets and lies keep bombarding Ivy at every turn. Why couldn't he just have told her the truth? Why must he continue to conceal everything and selfishly guard his secrets, never allowing Ivy to penetrate the walls he's built around his heart? Knowing what she knows now, will she still be able to stay married to Cullen? Will she ever be able to trust him??? Does he even love her or is he only using her as he's used so many others??? And now she knows for sure that there have been others! Truths are told! Secrets are revealed! Lies are exposed! Commitments made! Promises sworn! Oh My! But has Cullen finally revealed everything??? About the Author

Dr. Herrera serves as a professor of Elementary Education at Kansas State University and directs the Center for Intercultural and Multilingual Advocacy (CIMA) in the College of Education and her research focuses on literacy opportunities with culturally and linguistically diverse students, reading strategies, and teacher preparation for diversity in the classroom. Dr. Herrera has recently published two books with Allyn and Bacon, Mastering ESL and Bilingual Methods: Differentiated Instruction for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students (2005) and Assessment Accommodations for Classroom Teachers of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students (2007). Dr. Herrera has also authored articles for numerous nationally known journals such as the Bilingual Research Journal, Journal of Hispanic Higher Education, Journal of Research in Education, and the Journal of Latinos and Education.

Dr. Perez serves as an assistant professor of Elementary Education at Kansas State University and is the Associate Director of Undergraduate Programming at the Center for Intercultural and Multilingual Advocacy (CIMA) in the College of Education and her research has focused on literacy development and instruction for culturally and linguistically diverse students and parental involvement. Dr. Perez has published The Five Components of Reading Development: A Classroom Teacher’s Guide to Scaffolding Reading Instruction for ELL Students (2006) and ELL Literacy Interventions: Accommodations and Acceleration for Reading Success (2005). Dr. Herrera has also co-authored a book chapter for Culturally responsive teacher education: Language, curriculum, and community (2008).

Kathy Escamilla is a Professor of Education at the University of Colorado, Boulder.� She has been a bilingual teacher, program administrator and professor for over 37 years.� She helped to develop the Spanish reconstruction of Reading Recovery (Descubriendo La Lectura) which was published in the book “”Instrumento de observaci�n de los logros de la leco-escritura inicial.” (Heinemann).� She has done extensive research in the area of literacy for Spanish speaking children in the U.S. and has authored over 40 journal articles in this area.� She served two terms as the President of the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) and works as a technical assistant and consultant for Bilingual/ESL programs nationwide.

Not succinct enough

I'm surprised at all the good reviews for this book.

I'm taking this for a class on Teaching Language Arts to English Language Learners.

I don't find this book valuable. Major emphasis in this book are about the benefits of understanding a student's background (e.g. you can use a student's native language to help them learn English) and about teaching interactively (blending part-to-whole and whole-to-part learning) in language acquisition.

I feel like the points in this book could be made a lot more succinctly. Elements of Style or Word Power Made Easy were so fun to read because the points they make equal the amount of effort you put into it. This book creates a lot of words with not much insight.

Great book for teachers and teacher educators

This is a wonderful book on teaching and learning on so many levels. It is comprehensive in its approach towards teaching reading and the necessary task of differentiating literacy learning for diverse student populations. With a fine grained comb, the authors work through what needs to happen in classrooms with culturally and linguistically diverse students, advocating for interactive approaches to literacy learning. There are recommendations in their chapters on everything from reading assessment, vocabulary development, phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, comprehension, writing, to inclusive literacy instruction. This book is an excellent resource for teachers because of the many examples and activities that bring the research-based theories to life.

Great resource!

This was a required textbook for my grad course. It is well written and provides great lesson strategies for the ELLS to use in the classroom. I will use this as a reference for instruction with my 3rd grade ELLs and all student. Great resource to keep at your fingertips.
