About the Author
Professor Striebig received his PhD from The Pennsylvania State University, engineering school. He has served as editor on major journals in his subject area such as the Journal of Engineering for Sustainable Development. He has led major, funded, award-winning research activities, including the U.S. EPA study in West Africa. Professor Striebig has written several book chapters, numerous peer-reviewed journal articles, and presented at many peer-reviewed conferences.

Professor Ogundipe has previously held academic positions at Stevens Institute of Technology and the Polytechnic Institute of New York University. He has a Ph.D from Stevens Institute of Technology. His current areas of specialization and scholarship include Life Cycle Analysis, Industrial Ecology, and developing methods for assessing sustainability.

Professor Papadakis is a political economist with expertise in energy management and the role of energy in sustainable development. Dr. Papadakis' research has been published in specialized reports of the National Science Foundation, and in such journals as Evaluation and Program Planning, Journal of Technology Transfer, The Scientist, and the International Journal of Technology Management.

Not as helpful as I would have liked

The book was extensively researched but not very useful as a shopping primer. He has two whole lines in the book comparing hybrid to electric cars but doesn't compare them to biodiesel. This is the biggest reason I bought the book so I can purchase the best vehicle. He rates tea not on the chemicals used or region of the world it was grown but on how much milk you put in it. He rates rice on the efficiency of the farmer but never gives brands of efficiently produced rice. How would anyone know if a particular rice was grown efficiently. He gives the carbon footprint of a car crash, a forest fire , a space shuttle even a heart surgery. I'm sorry but I'm not going to choose to die because of the carbon footprint of a life saving surgery or decide whether to crash my car into a tree because of it either. Exactly what am I suppose to use this information for. There is some interesting things in the book but it is laid out so poorly you have to weed through all kinds of useless facts to get to it. This isn't very helpful for someone wanting to be a greener consumer.

Somewhat interesting, but irritating and fuzzy.

It was a somewhat interesting read, but there are a few things in this book that I just cannot get past:
1. The liberal use of the terms like "guesstimate" and "flaky calculation." I understand that this is not exact... Is it necessary to mention this multiple times on every single page?
2. Lack of continuity. The text jumps around too much. There were places where it mentions things that have not been explained with no reference, and other where it references back to things explained only a few pages back.
3. Inconsistency. Some of the factors considered in calculations for items were completely left out for similar items. No real clear explanation of why, and I can't imagine that there is no impact on conclusions.

An introduction to the 10 ton lifestyle (if you are willing to do your own research)

This reads like a special interests piece for a magazine.

While the set up is easy to follow, the book itself never delves into the depths of the subject. The appendices do a better job of delving in, but I was still left feeling like somebody was quoting sources to me.

I was particularly annoyed by the fact that some of the findings weren't applicable to most people's lives. Though that might just be because I'm american and the author is British. A good example of this is when he discussed boiling potatoes.

While people do boil potatoes to make mashed potatoes, there are other reasons and ways to prepare potatoes, that don't get even a slight mention. What if I wanted to bake a potato, or heat a potato in the microwave? How would those preparations differ in the way of carbon output? There was a minor mention of microwaves taking up less energy, but beyond that I couldn't find another mention of the devices.

Another issue I had was with how he referred to alternate lifestyles. For bike riders, he put up some figures about how what foods you eat, change your carbon output, failing to mention that a person driving a car would still have eaten similar foods and thus were still creating that same ammount of carbon in addition from the carbon footprint of the car. For vegans he claims that he has vegan friends who don't seem to consider that lifestyle a hardship. I'm not saying I expect him to do an indepth explanation of veganism, or bike riding, but I'd have prefered if he actually seemed to pay any attention to different ways a person might choose to lower their carbon footprint.

All of these are minor issues, but since the book claims to show you a true carbon footprint, rather than the 'toeprints' it claims people are used to seeing, I was disappointed with how little the author did to consider multiple lifestyles or personal needs. I think perhaps a better summary of what this book is about would be how to live the author's 10 ton lifestyle.

This IS the book you're looking for.

UPDATE: After looking around a bit on Amazon, I have discovered that the review I wrote is being displayed for very different versions of this book. My comments refer specifically to the version co-written by Luigi Miraglia and published by Focus Publishing. If the page you're looking at doesn't name that author or publisher, what I'm saying here doesn't apply.

Regarding the Focus Publishing edition:

On the off chance that this might be the updated version of the book from Focus Publishing, I decided to order it. This is the updated book. The text is large and clearly printed. All the macrons are included. And most important, copious pictures and notes--all in Latin--have been added to the margins by Luigi Miraglia (who has taken up the torch of the sorely missed Hans �rberg).

This book follows the same pattern as Lingua Latina Per Se Illustrata. Short stories in Latin are shown side-by-side with labeled pictures and clarifications of the language being used. Every word of the stories and the explanations is in Latin. If you have finished reading Familia Romana, you should be able to read this book quite easily.

My favorite supplement to the LLPSI series of books, whose introductory textbook is "Familia Romana." It is a vivid retelling of some of the most memorable stories of the Holy Bible, originally published in 1784 by a pious Frenchman. The prose is lucid and simple. The presentation is as that of other books in the so-called "nature method." That is,

New words, when impossible to assimilate otherwise, are explained either by way of ever-helpful illustrations or by straightforward marginal notes: thus, the meaning of "antecedere" is clarified through an antonym, "sequi;" that of "decipere" through a synonym, "fallere;" that of "regulus" through a descriptive phrase, "parvus rex;" that of "trabs" through an image; that of "motus" though its source word, "movere;" and so on and so forth.

Highly recommended. But read "Familia Romana" first!

Don brings two general qualifications to the authorship of Healing the Wounds of Childhood. The first, and perhaps most important, is that he has traveled the territory he describes, and he has accomplished an arguably miraculous level of personal change in one lifetime. As a psychotherapist, he works in a style that requires deep empathy and attunement with his patients. It is a level of emotional presence that he could not even have understood or imagined when he began his healing journey. As a Continuum Movement teacher, he teaches fluid movement. Again, this would have been unimaginable to him three decades ago. Thus, he has clearly walked what he talks. His second general qualification is that he has been immersed in both the psychotherapeutic and somatic therapy worlds for the past forty-seven years. His roots were in traditional clinical psychology, but earlyon, he realized from his own experience that the body must be included. Thus began his journey in both the psychotherapeutic and somatic realms. Dr. St John studied Gestalt Therapy at the LA Gestalt Therapy Institute and Neo-Reichian therapy with Drs. Allan Darbonne and Jack Lee Rosenberg; the Psychology of Selves and Voice Dialogue Method with Drs. Hal and Sidra Stone; Hakomi with Dr. Ron Kurtz; Coherence Therapy with Dr. Bruce Ecker; AEDP with Dr. Diana Fosha; and CIMS with Dr. Albert Sheldon and Beatriz Winstanley. He has taken immersion courses and core training in Dr. Sue Johnson's Emotionally-Focused Couple's Therapy. He is certified in Somatic Experiencing, the work of Dr. Peter Levine. He has also studied cranio-sacral therapy and for twenty years has been studying and practicing Continuum Movement developed by Emilie Conrad and Susan Harper. Don's doctoral dissertation, written at the Western Institute for Social Research, focused on the consequences of and recovery from relational maltreatment in early childhood. He lives in Salt Lake City with his wife of thirty years, Diane, co-founder of Paths of Connection. They have been teaching together for twenty-five years.

Somatic Therapies, the Key to Healing Childhood Wounds

Healing the Wounds of Childhood is an excellent introduction to somatic therapies and their history intertwined with psychotherapy. Don St. John, a PhD level psychologist, has a rich background and uses his own history to show how integrating the body into therapy is a key component necessary to change. I appreciated his explanations of stress, how our birth affects us, and how trauma, not just the big T or PTSD, is derived from many experiences including our primary birth experience and our time in the womb. Like him I started out with traditional therapy, like him I began to explore body work and found that this work through the body accentuated my growth, like him I came to a similar conclusion, "I could have stayed in talk therapy forever and would not have explored the depths I have managed to reach once I included the somatic therapies in my healing regimen. As important and valuable as good psychotherapy is, it is not enough." He has an excellent chapter that defines sensory motor amnesia (SMA) and how it equals the chronic tension so many experience. I strongly recommend this book to therapists and the average person on a healing journey.

Superb Book of Self Discovery

The wisdom in this book came to me at a pivotal time in my life. Thank you! Once again I"m amazed at the human spirit--how we collectively and individually evolve despite childhood scripts. I was reminded yet again how important it is to pay attention to our emotional tones and how to participate with them at a cellular level through bodywork. I was also thrilled reading about Emilie Conrad's work in Continuum. I too was personally effected by her teachings of the fluid system and have not found anything as profound as the breath, sound and movement Emilie embodied.
Don St John's commitment to life a joyous life has inspired me to keep on keeping on. His book is a reminder of our "birthright" to live a healthy, integrated, shame free life. I have deep appreciation for the author and I recommend this book for all those eager to find insights, tools and inspiration for a meaningful life. Bravo!

Dr.Don St John has done an excellent job of interweaving his life story with disciplines and practices that he has found to be beneficial for living a thriving life. I appreciate his professional combination of psychology, science, physiology, somatics, abundant love, and spirituality. Along with his personal story.
Your childhood could be considered 'normal' and you will still benefit from his belief that we need a "new model" of what it means to be healthy. A holistic model that includes our body fluids, cells, and tissues just as much as our mind, heart, guts, physical & emotional body, and spirituality.
And if you are a mother or father you will gain a deeper understanding of the importance of your role. As a mother, and after reading Don's book, I am even more convinced of what I have intuitively known my whole life.
In order for children to effortlessly remain in their wholeness, their essence, and thrive as individuals, their mother and father must unbind their wholeness, heal, grow, and thrive while they are living. And it is never too late to start this journey.
Our children are made from our cells and body fluids, and while they represent our pure hearts and souls, they are also deeply affected by our personal story of childhood wounds and trauma, our ancestral baggage, and our current ways of functioning.
They inherit our inhibitions, to some extent, on an energetic and biological level upon conception. Through our growth we liberate them. Such a noble aspiration: to liberate our children via our personal growth.
And Dr. Don St John offers valuable exercises for obtaining this growth in his book.
Three words to summarize this book: hope, liberation, transformation
