Dr. Andrew P. Morrison is Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, and is in private practice of psychiatry and psychoanalysis in Cambridge, MA. He is author of several books on shame, including Shame, the Underside of Narcissism, The Culture of Shame, and multiple papers on shame and narcissism. He is a supervising analyst at Massachusetts Institute for Psychoanalysis, and on the faculty of the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute, Inc.

It's all in the book title!

This series of "Essential Papers", is a must for any theorist, practitioner or academic in the field of psychology. It is dense, but by no means obtuse. It offers the core issues around pathological Narcissism, from the "greats" and not a watered down interpretation from a 21st century cult, who bandy the word about.
I return to it time and again, to reacquaint myself, both with the terminology and the essence of the disorder. Indeed a prevalent and most difficult "characterological" deficit to work with, but the most rewarding to fully grasp and understand. As was said by Buddha 'To know all, is to forgive all'.

scholarly theoretical book, but the title has it right

This is a collection of 17 articles written by different authors at different times, from Freud on. It's certainly not pop-psychology style; this is scholarly stuff. But if you're up for some scholarly stuff, this is just what the title claims: Essential Papers on Narcissism. The variety of viewpoints makes this a good collection to give you a broad understanding of what's out there about narcissism. You'll probably like some of the articles more than others (the writing styles do vary), and probably agree with some more than others, but the bottom line is that there is worthwhile material here. I found it thought-provoking and edifying. But not a walk-in-the-park read.
The term "narcissism" (like "narcissist") seems to be used in different ways, with somewhat different meanings, by different people these days. Reading these articles will help you get a grip on what the important issues are, regardless of how you define the terms.
Heavy on theory (of course) and lingo that presupposes some background in psychodynamic concepts and terminology.

No one seems to agree what is pathological narcissism. Some theoreticians regard it as a culture-dependent theoretical construct. Others fail to sufficiently differentiate it from the Borderline or Anti-social personality disorder. Some trace its genesis to the first year or years (the formative years) of life. Yet others believe that it can form as late as early adolescence or even, as a reactive formation, in adulthood. There are those who believe that some forms of narcissism are transient and all variants of narcissism can be successfully treated. Others regard it as mental ("malignant") cancer - the side effects can be ameliorated with medication - but nothing more. You will find them all here, in this great tome of introductions to pathological narcissism by the masters. Sam Vaknin, author of "Malignant Self Love - Narcissism Revisited".

The translation is by Hugh Price from the Plon edition of 1959. Dr Price has added some notes to explain references in the text that might be unfamiliar to English speaking students beginning philosophy.

A beautiful mind

Though it was a little awkward at first to get Weil's thoughts secondhand, the cumulative effect was impressive. I have a degree in philosophy, and I would have paid almost anything to have a lecturer like her! An illuminating insight into a great mind.

Home, not so Sweet Home

We learn a lot in this novel about the pressures and rewards (not so many of the latter) of living in a traditional extended but close-knit Indian family of shopkeepers: brothers and their families living in the same house; the submissiveness of women to their mothers-in-law even when these show their resentment of their daughters-in-law; the pressures on wives to produce children - boys for preference - and the disgrace if they fail to do so; the pressure for arranged marriages, and for the eldest daughter to be married before a younger brother; the importance of caste, social ranking, education, skin colour and horoscopes within the marriage market; even young girls having to fast one day a year for their future husbands; the pressure to adopt the children of deceased relatives; the demands of the family shop on all the members of the family and the ethos of unremitting hard work by the men to make the shop prosper; the women, in this novel at any rate, spending the energies left over from cooking and housework in being jealous of each other, and, being particularly status-conscious, in nagging their husbands who, in this novel, are softer than their wives.

The respected, benign and conservative patriarch maintains some kind of unity in the family, but when he dies, the tensions multiply. The patriarch had stood in the way of modernization. The shop had sold nothing but saris. After his death, the second generation modernize the shop, expand into ready-made clothes, and then pull down the old house in which they have been living and build a more modern one - at the cost of, among other things, bribing the local authorities and the police. With great difficulty, the sons push out the nephew who was only a sister's son. The men in the third generation are more ambitious still, now branch out into bridal dresses and all the accoutrements needed for those lavishly described Indian weddings. A new daughter-in-law does not show the traditional submission to the mother-in-law, and keeps herself and her husband separate from the communal living that had been the norm before. In the third generation also a young girl falls `unsuitably' in love and suffers heart-break under the still conservative social restraints of her family.

It is basically a sad book, with none of the characters being really happy and all being caught up in family tensions. Most unhappy of all are the two principal characters - Sona of the second generation and Nisha of the third: Sona because the world around her is changing too fast for her; Nisha because it is not changing fast enough and she is still trapped. We are drawn deeply into this family's story, which is very well told, with what I found a moving ending. The author's style is straightforward, even if it is peppered with many Indian words the English reader will not know; their rough meaning, however, can generally be guessed. Her tone is compassionate rather than censorious, though there is much to be censorious about.

Excellent.

I highly recommend Manju's books to anyone who desires to gain insight into Indian culture. Manju is very open and honest in every character she has included and one cannot help but experience the emotions and situations as she unfolds them. I do not recommend these books for young readers as some content (particularly the sexual issues) is better suited to adults. Manju is exceptional in drawing the reader into her novels and allows each experience and emotion to be portrayed in a way that is clear and down to earth. Her writing stirs ones own emotions in many ways too. At times there is a place for sympathy, at other times for compassion and above all a greater understanding of various aspects related to Indian beliefs, traditions, Marriage, food and other cultural aspects as she weaves these into the story. I have loved each of Manju's books I have read and found they held my attention from beginning to end. Not everyone will feel the same way, but for me she is a brilliant writer and embraces human nature and her own culture in a way that I have enjoyed and learnt from. The family as a strong unit was brought to the fore and women took their roles very seriously. One can respect and admire greatly certain values and traditions as you gain understanding. Arranged marriages is an example of this. Children are given respect and love and the parents truly desire the best for them, even when traditions dictate a structure that can be exceptionally difficult for the women as they live together under one roof. Manjur Kapur is truly an excellent writer. She openly brings into her novels situations and content that surprises, but one does accept them as part of her ability to reveal as well as teach. I have enjoyed the books by her that I have read. I will be looking forward to further novels by her.

HIndu Home, be glad it's not yours.

This is a well written book. The happy endings seem to be about finding more freedom after your MIL is dead or her oppression neutralized when a character fulfills her duty by bearing a son. This book is no advertisement for the status of HIndu women within their extended families. You keep hoping the characters can grow themselves, but the main characters are constantly stymied in all areas of their lives. Every brief fling at rebellion or growth ends poorly. It seems to be about settling in to what you have been allocated as a woman, which is a very narrowly defined and submissive role. That is the only way to achieve even mild contentment for these women. Ugh. The author makes you identify with their feelings and struggles while inadvertently making you understand you are really lucky not to be these women. Whether it is the author's intention or not the book reveals a great deal about the Indian mindset and the traditional "hard wiring" of the culture. Full of intriguing details of daily Indian life in the households. Indian men are largely portrayed as essentially selfish and spoiled mama's boys in the home and alternately greedy and scheming in business. I read the whole slowly unfolding story, but put it down with a profound sense of relief I am a gori and not one of these ladies. No insult, but this is not the life for me. The self perpetuating yet static web of Daughter in law, Mother in law, Mother, Son, relationships was depressing.

SQUIER is the Julia Gregg Brill Professor of Women’s Studies and English at Penn State University and author of eight books, including Babies in Bottles: Twentieth-Century Visions of Reproductive Technology (Rutgers University Press), Liminal Lives: Imagining the Human at the Frontiers of Biomedicine, and Virginia Woolf and London: The Sexual Politics of the City. Squire's multidisciplinary, witty, and engaging book exposes what so many of us have intuited, but never had the interdisciplinary expertise (or courage?) to state. The chicken--as egg layer, as cultural icon, as metaphor, as friend--is at the center of our culture, a vehicle through which we communicate our beliefs (or myths) and debate who we are and what we might become. A must read!

There is So Much to Learn About Chickens!

In the ten years I've been a backyard chicken keeper, I've picked up several books about raising chickens. But only now that I've read Squire's book do I feel that I really KNOW my birds. In part this is because the book is so wide-ranging, finding chicken tracks through all kinds of (mainly) 20th-century literature, film, drama, biological research, eugenics, genomics, lore, histories of farming and agribusiness, and contemporary art. This book has so many examples of chickens playing roles in important cultural moments that, at about the half-way point, I would not have been surprised to read that chickens preceded monkeys in being the first animals shot into space. Seriously, though, this book shows that chickens have been either at the center of or integral to a wide range of scientific developments, cultural changes, pharmaceutical developments, literatures, and the industrialization of modern agriculture. As someone who reads a fair number of academic books, what stands out about this book is that it personal, being framed both by Squire's experiences as a backyard chicken keeper and as a researcher interested in these birds. When she travels to Europe to talk to chicken experts and artists, she tells of riding in the car with them as they speed down the highway talking about new breeds of hens--it's that kind of book.

Psychiatrist and Harvard professor Greene follows up The Explosive Child with an in-depth approach to aid parents and teachers to work together with behaviorally challenging students. Greene's philosophy is driven by the recognition that "kids who haven't responded to natural consequences don't need more consequences, they need adults who are knowledgeable about how challenging kids come to be challenging." Greene's "Plan B" system, which is fully and clearly explained in the course of the book, emphasizes identifying challenging behaviors-acting out, hitting, swearing, poor performance in class-and then working with students to find actual, practical ways to avoid them. Helpfully, Greene uses a fictional school for examples, devoting several pages to illustrative anecdotes in each chapter, greatly increasing the material's accessibility. Greene's technique is not fail-proof, principally because it requires the good will and hard work of all participants; a section on implementing Plan B in the face of real disagreement or apathy would have been helpful. However, Plan B has all the qualities of accessibility, logic and compassion to make it a solid strategy for parents and educators.

Zero-tolerance policies in school that take swift and harsh action against children for misbehavior are in danger of attaching labels and stigma to children with behavior problems, according to Greene, psychiatrist and author of The Explosive Child (1998). Greene explores the causes behind the behavior of children who are considered hard to control. He maintains that such children are not acting out of defiance but because they lack the skills to adapt their behavior to school norms. When adults take the time to teach children adaptive skills in increments, they see remarkable improvements in the behavior of these children. Drawing on his experience as a psychiatrist, Greene recounts vignettes of challenging behavior—from crying and whining to avoid tasks to manipulation to disruptive shouting or truculence. These children often have difficulty changing routine during the school day, reflecting on many thoughts at the same time, or managing emotions. Green advises making a checklist of unsolved problems and lagging skills and devising specific plans for addressing them. Must-read for teachers and administrators

I want to buy a copy of this book for every teacher I know. I teach elementary school and am constantly frustrated at how all behavior management, from the classroom to the school and district levels, boils down to reward and punishment. Obviously, that system doesn't work, because it's the same kids receiving said rewards and punishments day after day--if it worked, wouldn't the punished kids eventually learn?

This book highlights exactly why they don't learn: because they need to be TAUGHT. I couldn't be rewarded or punished into becoming a good chess player, because no matter how many cookies or slaps on the wrist you gave me, I still don't know how to play chess! The same applies to kids who have emotional, behavior, or at-home issues that lie at the root of their frequent "misbehavior." Understanding that, and teaching problem-solving and special behaviors the same way we teach academic skills, is a much more worthwhile and effective way to address recurring behavior issues in students of all ages.

Long overdue -- powerful and effective

I am a clinical psychologist specializing in pediatric neuropsychology. I was introduced to Dr. Greene's Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) approach during my post-doctoral training at a multidisciplinary center for children/adolescents with dyslexia, AD/HD and other learning and behavior disorders. CPS is powerful and effective but takes lots of patience on the part of adults. It is a long-overdue as an approach that is needed in our schools.

I have worked with so many teachers who cite "motivation" as the reason for a child's behavior problems. I have seen functional behavior analysis forms with checkboxes for "low motivation." What, in fact, is "motivation"? It is one of the those temrs that SOUNDS like it explains something, but it doesn't really explain anything at all. No child WANTS to fail, WANTS to be embarrassed in front of his/her peers, WANTS to go to the principal's office, or WANTS to suspended. As Dr. Greene makes plain: "Children do well if they can." If they can't, it is up to the adults to figure out the skill deficit and teach them the skills they needed.

The education community now realizes that the "wait-to-fail" model does not serve children, but many are confused about how to implement "response to intervention" approaches, especially for behavior problems. The diagnosis doesn't matter; identifying the skill deficits that cause behavior problems does. The skill deficits are similar across diagnostic labels -- oppositional defiant disorder, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, or a learning disability.

This approach is not a cure-all. It is somewhat language-intensive and may or may not be as effectice for children with language deficits. I don't believe that children fail school; I believe our schools are failing our children. This approach can go a long way toward helping schools help the most vulnerable children in our communities.

Great Book for Teachers and All Other School Personnel

This book takes a completely different approach to classroom discipline. No more rewards and punishments, but actually talking to kids and finding out what concerns they have. Then, the adult and child reach a solution together which makes it more likely the solution will stick.

There's a running story throughout the book that really helps with understanding this approach along with Q & A sessions that also provide added understanding. It's outside-the-box thinking that seems like it would really work. There are ways to get parents involved too so it's not all on the teacher. Highly recommended!

Also they promoted some software which is good but this should lower the price due marketing incomes...

Needed a Name Chage to Reflect Content Changes

The changes from the first two editions to the third one are so great that merely calling a new edition is an understatement. I have all three editions and most (if not all) of the negative comments concern the first two. I've gone through it several times and have yet to find any of the typos/errors that were in the previous editions.

Given the expansion that occurred in this edition, it may have been better to have re-titled it as "Quantitative Risk Analysis Techniques" or something like that.

The one (and literal) weakness in the book is that it uses adhesive binding and may lose pages before it loses its usefulness. My copy is only two years old and is already starting to flop open at a couple of spots.

As the other reviewers have noted, this is the one of the standard references and covers the broadest range of topics. It is my first recommendation to anyone wanting to know more about the field.

Update: July 22, 2014
I've had to use Gorilla tape to reinforce the backing. For the Fourth Edition, I'd be willing to pay extra for a sewn-in binding and reinforced backing.

I purchased this book to learn to write simulation equations in excel but only found it was a manual ( type book ) with good information for a very expensive software I did not have....If you have RISK software, it is a great book to have... I returned my copy w/o scanning the entire book.

Just five hundred years ago almost everyone lived at the mercy of the dark. In a time before street lighting, travel at night was always perilous, and forbidden to all but a few. Edison's light assured cheap, abundant illumination for many, but not all. The democratic distribution of light in the United States depended upon the decades-long struggle by rural Americans to have the same access to electricity as those in the cities and suburbs. No simpleminded technological determinist, Brox (Here and Nowhere Else) appreciates how culture and technology have affected each other at every stage. She repeatedly reveals how humankind™s increasing ability to extend the hours of light available for work and for leisure has been critical to the evolution of societies almost everywhere. Her readings of, for example, prehistoric southern French caves, medieval and early modern villages, whaling and other ships, industrializing cities, Chicago™s White City of 1893, and wartime and peacetime blackouts are invariably fascinating and often original. In addition, she conveys technical information clearly and concisely. Brox™s concluding portions, about the unexpected negative effects of too much artificial light on observatories in southern California and elsewhere, are provocative and dismaying. Brox's intriguing blend of science, cultural analysis, and social history drew diverse reactions from critics. While the Boston Globe and the Washington Post would have preferred a tightened focus on technology, others applauded her ability to illuminate the relationships between and interdependence of culture, politics, economics, and science. Brox may not be an authority on such matters, but whatever she lacks in expertise, she makes up in enthusiasm and rigorous research. Her elegant writing, engaging characterizations, succinct technical explanations, and vivid evocations of a darkened nighttime world that no longer exists compensate for a meandering narrative and some debatable conclusions. Readers may never look at their bedside lamps in the same way again.

Shines a light on an important topic

I love books that show the connectedness of events, books like Bill Bryson's One Summer America 1927 and Rinker Buck's The Oregon Trail: A New American Journey. Brilliant shines a light on the world before and after Man harnessed fire, from stone lamps of the Pleistocene 40,000 years ago to the future of cool light and the concern today of light pollution. Despite some sections heavy in technical detail, Brox has a lyrical style which capture's the reader's imagination from the pitch dark streets of a medieval city to the constant drudgery of an American farm wife before the electric grid expanded to rural areas. Never before had I considered what the brightness of the night sky has done to astronomy or thought about the darker side of the TVA water project in the 1930's. This is a book that will expand your understanding and perhaps even make you ponder why the gods were outraged that Prometheus stole fire and gave it to humankind

Good book on the history of artificial light

Good book on the history of artificial light. I work in the LED lighting industry (LED Driver Chips) and have an interest in lighting already, so book was a good read for me. Well written, not dry like a textbook.

"Brilliant" is kind o' brilliant

With this sort of book - an examination of an event, a process, an evolution - sometimes the complaint is a lack of continuity. Readers bemoan, and rightfully, what is little more than a collection of facts and anecdotes. In some particular order, yes, but not much of one. That complaint can't be made about Jane Brox's "Brilliant."

Brox establishes a beginning thread, then writes along it to enlighten the reader (sorry, I just couldn't resist) as to the role of artificial light - which is to say any light after sundown other than moonlight - as the reigning hallmark of civilization. She successfully depicts artificial light as inextricable from the social, creative and industrial evolution that has led to our modern life.

I imagine a stylized seminal moment, maybe ten thousand years ago, which might have been the beginning of the beginning of cities. In my setting a lone traveler is making his way as the sun fades. He spots a fire - small and contained, therefore made by a human - and heads toward it. By good luck, he and the other human speak the same words. The two spend the night in the circle of the fire glow, in some comfort given by the radiant heat from the fire. Our traveler has a rabbit hanging from the cord around his waist. The fire maker has gathered some berries and roots. They combine their holdings, eat well and converse. The anxiety and resultant depression in each human is abated. Your version will likely be different, but I'll bet whatever it is it includes a flame driving back the darkness.

In the movie "All the President's Men" Deep Throat, in the shadows of the parking garage, reveals his presence to Woodward not with a shuffle or by clearing his throat, but by striking a match. The metaphor is obvious, yet so right for the moment it is also delicious. As much as language - maybe more - a gem of light within darkness defines human beings on planet Earth.

Today we take electricity on demand as granted, barely giving this tool a first thought, much less a second. We tend to view electricity as something almost as natural as rain. One of Brox's resultant subtexts is a display of the millions of Americans who lived the nineteenth century well into the twentieth. In some cases there were still rural areas in America without electricity as late as 1960, of people still living by kerosene light and unable to lighten their endless farm work by using electric motors. Yes, at the dawn of the Space Age some distant farmers still lived and worked in the halo of chemical burning.

Jimmy Carter contributes several anecdotes about his flame-lit boyhood in southern Georgia. The same Jimmy Carter, of course, who was born well into the twentieth century and who would become a nuclear engineer and President.

(Some of the lesser reviews for this book fault Brox for technical mistakes, which are, in fact, in the text. I think this shortcoming lies more with the current state of publishing (i.e., the demise of editors) than with Brox. As well, this book is about the social impact of artificial lighting much more than the technical aspects, although I certainly learned a lot about the limitations, and frequent monitoring, any light with a flame required. A few minutes spent on the web page for this book indicates this content.)
