About the Author
Millard J. Erickson (PhD, Northwestern University) has served as a pastor and seminary dean and has taught at several schools, including Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Western Seminary (Portland and San Jose), and Baylor University. He has also held numerous visiting professorships, both in the United States and internationally. Erickson is the author of many books, including Introducing Christian Doctrine. He lives in Mounds View, Minnesota.

My favorite systematic theology book

I read portions of over a dozen systematic theology texts before deciding that this one is my favorite. He is insightful and deeply philosophical. The proper audience for this book would be someone who wants an academically rigorous, deep text. The reader who wants something more basic and introductory should also consider Wayne Grudem's text. Both authors are transparent and fair, so one can easily discern where he or she disagrees and still gain insight. One of the challenges of systematic theology is that the Bible is not written as a textbook, and some verses seem to oppose others. Erickson is very reluctant to "explain away" verses that seem to contradict his ideas. His careful judgments combined with exceptional clarity of writing without sacrificing depth make this my choice for a systematic theology book. However, Grudem's book is so simple and clear that you can put in less effort and still profit from it.

Best of the Bunch

Though I may disagree with some of the conclusions Erickson reaches in this systematic theology, I often find myself recommending it to others, and I've found it to be an invaluable resource. It is more comprehensive than any one volume theology out there, and is much better than its competition. The major modern evangelical systematic theologies, in addition to this one, are Wayne Grudem and Michael Horton. I don't recommend Grudem's, simply because it is written at a fairly popular level, and because I don't think he's as fair to those who disagree with him as Erickson is. From what I've seen of Horton's theology, I don't think it's bad, but it doesn't interact with the array of theologians and theologies that Erickson does. Geisler's four-volume set is also fairly popular, but I think he fails in objectively explaining what others believe.
Christian Theology, as I mentioned, is comprehensive. It touches on nearly every major topic one could think of, with great insight. Erickson presents every side of an issue fairly and responsibly. Often I'll read through the list of possible positions one can take on an issue, and then find myself shocked at the one he ends up taking; that is a true mark of objectivity. Also, as I alluded to above, Erickson is well versed in a wide range of theologies and theologians. He interacts with liberals, neo-orthodox, post-liberals, fundamentalists, dispenationalists, a variety of philosophers, and non-orthodox groups. He also has a good grasp of church history (the other three theologians I've mentioned are fairly myopic in this area). What this means is that the book is not only a resource itself, but will point you to a number of sources for further study. It's also the most well written of the available options.
Is it perfect? No, and I disagree with him on a number of topics. However, if you're a pastor, religious studies student, or an interested layperson, you simply need this book. Do yourself a favor and get it.

AN IMPORTANT MODERN EVANGELICAL SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY

Millard Erickson (b. 1932) is a theologian (and ordained Baptist minister) who wrote this work between 1983-1985. It and Wayne Grudem's Systematic Theology: An Introduction to Biblical Doctrine) are perhaps the most popular current evangelical Systematic Theologies today; but Erickson's takes a cautious approach to "miraculous gifts today" (e.g., "it is not possible to determine with any certainty whether the contemporary charismatic phenomena are indeed gifts of the Holy Spirit"), unlike Grudem's supportive stance.
Erickson subdivides the book into twelve parts: Studying God (e.g., "Theology and Its Language"); Knowing God (e.g., "God's Universal Revelation"); What God is Like (e.g., "The Goodness of God"); What God Does (e.g., "Evil and God's World: A Special Problem"); Humanity (e.g., "The Origin of Humanity"); Sin (e.g., "The Social Dimension of Sin"); The Person of Christ (e.g., "The Humanity of Christ"); The Work of Christ ("The Extent of the Atonement"); The Holy Spirit (e.g., "The Miraculous Gifts Today"); Salvation (e.g., "The Antecedent to Salvation: Predestination"); The Church (e.g., "The Unity of the Church"); and The Last Things (e.g., "Millennial and Tribulational Views"; Erickson is Premillenial and Post-Tribulational).
Obviously, one cannot summarize a 1300-page book in an Amazon review; but here are some examples of Erickson's views: As far as Free Will, he says "The position being advocated here is what B.S. Warfield regarded as the most diluted form of Calvinism... for it holds that ... God works in such a suasive way with the will of the individual that he freely makes the choice that God intends." (Pg. 359)
He states, “The age-day theory fits quite well with the geological record ... (and) interpreting (the Hebrew word 'yom') as a period of indefinite length is not a forced understanding of the word, although not the most common meaning." (pg. 382) He suggests, "there is insufficient evidence for the existence of guardian angels." (pg. 445)
"There is no condemnation (of a child) until one reaches the age of responsibility." (pg. 639) He notes, "It is not enough simply to believe in Jesus and accept the offer of grace; there must be a real alteration of the inner person." (pg. 938)
He asserts, "Hal Lindsey's 'Late Great Planet Earth' is a noteworthy example of this type of 'eschatomania.'" (Pg. 1152) He contends, "Further, if God is to accomplish his goals in this world, he may not have been free to make man unsusceptible to endless punishment." (Pg. 1239)
This hefty, detailed, yet seldom "dogmatic" volume is well worth a place in any serious theological library.
